Seeing Southland get behind its own, well ain’t that something special!

We saw plenty of that recently when the Southland Sharks made history, playing their first-ever home grand final and coming away with the win. The place was packed out, the atmosphere electric and we were there for it.

As proud sponsors, the Elm Marketing team were courtside, hoarse from cheering, weepy with pride, and while that well-deserved trophy belongs to the Sharks, wins like that feel like a win for all of us.

Because every time a Southland team succeeds, a local artist gets recognised, a business does something brilliant or someone from our region makes their mark, it shines a spotlight on our little corner of the South. It puts Southland on the map and we all get to bask in the afterglow.

Yes, we’re slightly more than a hop, skip and a jump away from the biggest cities, but Southland has never let geography get in the way of doing big things. There’s a lot of talent down here. In sport, business, the arts and right across our communities. And every achievement gives us another reason to be proud of where we come from.

It creates opportunities. It gets people talking about Southland. And it gives the next generation something to aspire to. But perhaps most importantly, it reminds us what can happen when a community gets behind its people.
